Bangladesh is experiencing the country’s worst flood disaster in a decade. The monsoon floods of the year 2020 are causing a devastating impact on the Northern, North-Eastern, and South-Eastern region of Bangladesh. According to the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR), over 4 million people, including around 1.3 million children, are affected. The floods destroyed 41,918 hectares of cropland and at least 100 people have lost their lives.

Immediate Needs

Current needs identified by our local nonprofit partners include:

  • Clean drinking water
  • Cash support to buy essential foods and, especially for children
  • Hygiene kits
  • Makeshift shelters and tarps
  • WaSH (water, sanitation and hygiene) items
  • Tube well repair
  • Mosquito nets
  • Animal fodder

In the medium-term, recovery and reconstruction efforts will be needed to repair the damaged infrastructure, especially river embankments, dykes, houses, safe drinking water sources, and sanitation facilities.

Our Partners’ Response

Sajida Foundation has identified 20,000 families needing assistance (8,000 of whom have been displaced completely)  in Borgra, Sirajganj, Manikganj, Madaripur, Sariatpur, and Sariatpur.

Sajida is providing each displaced family with:

  • BDT 500 cash grant to purchase dry food: Transfer is being done through mobile money;
  • 20 water purifying tablets: Each tablet can purify 5 liters of water; and
  • 5 saline (Oral rehydration salts) packets

Sajida is keen to work with partners to expand immediate relief distribution. Additionally, they have planned to expand its support to Netrokona, low lying areas around Dhaka, and areas around Narayanganj. They will also undertake home repairs, toilet repairs, and tube well decontamination.

National Alliance of Humanitarian Actors, Bangladesh (NAHAB) is an alliance of voluntary, non-government, non-profitable, and non-political organizations that advocates and facilitates humanitarian actions in Bangladesh. Partner organizations of NAHAB have distributed cash support, hygiene items, and dry foods in most affected districts such as Kurigram and Sirajgonj.

Spreeha Bangladesh Foundation (SBF) has planned an emergency response campaign to minimize impacts for people affected by the flooding. They are targeting the districts of Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Netrokona, and Jamalpur.

Planned Interventions by SBF include: emergency food support; supply of water purifying tablet; supply of hygiene products; essential drugs for water-borne diseases and vector-borne diseases.

An Organization for Socio-Economic Development (AOSED) is supporting vulnerable people primarily through distributing cash support, distributing safe drinking water, hygiene kit, and repairing damaged latrines.
