SITUATION REPORT: August 3, 2023
Super Typhoon Doksuri, local name “Egay”, made landfall in the Northern Philippines on July 25 and maintained its intensity until it exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on July 27. On July 28, Typhoon Khanun, local name “Falcon” entered the PAR. While Khanun did not make a landfall, both Typhoons boosted the Southwest Monsoon, battering parts of the Philippines with heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides.
As of August 2, the report from the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported over 700,000 families affected across 50 provinces. There are currently 15,000 displaced families (more than 288,000 individuals) being served in evacuation centers. There is an estimated $102 million USD in damages to agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and other livelihood infrastructures.
The NDRRMC said in its latest bulletin that 196 areas were placed under a “state of calamity”. This designation allows the provincial government to use quick response funds and control prices of basic goods.

Caritas has begun distributing relief packages to its most affected Dioceses: (1) Tuguegarao, Cagayan; (2) Laoag, Ilocos Norte; (3) Arch Nueva Segovia, Ilocos Sur; (4) Bangued (Abra).
Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP)
PBSP is activating relief operations in Cagayan and Pampanga provinces in Luzon to support affected farming communities through distribution of relief packages at PHP 2,000 (USD 36) each. Each pack will contain food and non-food items enough to sustain displaced families for 5-6 days.
