Our Mission

The mission of the Indian Red Cross is to inspire, encourage and initiate at all times all forms of humanitarian activities so that human suffering can be minimized and even prevented and thus contribute to creating more congenial climate for peace.

The Need

India faces acute shortage of nurses and health care facilities are minimal in villages. Deaths among infants and mothers are high due to shortage of nurses. Many girls often do not continue their studies because their parents cannot afford the cost of educating them further.

The Solution

Provide free ANM training to girls from villages of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh and facilitate their placement in health centers.

Our Impact

Training increases the economic, educational and social status of families of the ANM trained nurses. There will be a marked improvement in health indicators in the area the nurses are deployed.

The program of Indian Red Cross Society – Maharashtra State Branch aims to provide 2 year Auxiliary Nurses and Midwives (ANM) at Bel-Air College of Nursing, Panchagni for underprivileged girls from villages of Maharashtra and at St.Joseph’s MPHW Training School, Santhapeth, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. During the second year it covers Midwifery including antenatal, intra-natal / labour room management, post natal care, child health. The students are required to attend classroom session as well as gain practical experience in clinical as well as community health programs. The program will enable all the selected girls to complete the course free of cost which includes course fee, accommodation and food and also get placed in village health programmes.

The students are selected based on a selection process laid down. They include (i) advertisements published in various local newspapers across the state in Maharashtra for Bel-Air College of Nursing and Andhra Pradesh for St.Joseph’s MPHW Training School, Nellore, inviting applications to the ANM course (ii) eligibility as per State Nursing Council is Higher Secondary pass (iii) admission is given to candidates from rural parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh only (iv) preference given to candidates from poor economic background, orphans or from single parent with merit (v) an entrance examination is also conducted at the college level to determine merit along with class 12 marks (vi) final selection is made after a personal interview of each candidate.
