Our Mission

The China Foundation for Rural Development is a nongovernmental organization focused on rural development in China and abroad. The Foundation targets the main causes of poverty and works to improve health, promote educational equality, and improve rural livelihoods.

The Need

In China, malnutrition remains a serious threat for rural children; three meals a day is a luxury for nearly half of rural students. Most make do with inadequate starch-based diets with little meat and vegetables, which can lead to energy, protein, calcium and vitamin A deficiency.

The Solution

CFRD's Nutritious Meals Program focuses on improving rural children’s nutrition through the trinity of 1) nutritious meals, 2) installing “Love Kitchens” in rural schools and 3) nutrition education in underdeveloped areas.

Our Impact

Since 2008, provided over 1 million students with about 57 million nutritious meals and established 2,172 “Love Kitchens” in 17 provinces across China, and provided about 762,000 packages of Vita Meals for 605,000 people in 20 provinces.

A poor diet can result in malnutrition, growth retardation, and weakened immunity. In addition, many schools lack the equipment needed to prepare healthy meals and many communities lack access to information on the importance of nutrition.

CFRD’s Nutritious Meals Program provides:

  • For children: a daily nutritional supplement of one carton of milk and one egg during school hours
  • For schools: standard “Love Kitchen” equipment, including electric stoves, rice steamers, disinfection cabinets, operating tables and exhaust fans
  • For teachers, parents, and students: nutrition training and education

The program operates in many provinces across China, including: Sichuan, Yunnan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Fujian, Xinjiang, Jiangxi, Heilongjiang, Anhui, Ningxia, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. The program also carried out international school food programs for students in Cambodia and Ghana.

Your Impact

Your support will help address malnutrition in rural China by providing elementary school children with nutritious meals and providing schools with equipment and training to improve students’ nutritional status.

  • US$0.55 (3.5 Yuan) will provide 1 elementary school student with 1 nutritious meal, including a bottle of milk and an egg.
  • US$110 (700 Yuan) will support 1 elementary school student for 1 year of nutritious meals.
  • US$92,900 (60,000 Yuan) will support the construction of a Love Kitchen in an elementary school to feed 100 to 500 students with warm and nutritious meals.

Making a Difference

Alimunisa is a fourth grade student in Aktau County. Her family make their living by herding sheep and working as guards, with an annual income of about US$775 (5,000 Yuan). They are among the registered poor households in China. Because they live in a pastoral area, they typically have to dip into their meagre funds to purchase food, mainly pasta, for their meals. They rarely get a chance to eat vegetables or meat.

Ali is a bright and hardworking student and looks forward to school where she gets to eat meals she wouldn’t receive at home. Her favorites are the marinated chicken eggs and milk donated by the Nutritious Meals Program, as well as the meals made in the school’s “Love Kitchen”. Beyond making school more enjoyable, the meals have also helped Ali excel in her studies. Recently, she came in fourth place in a speech contest in the county.
