Continuous rain since the beginning of June 2022 has affected many lives in Pakistan, especially in Sindh and Balochistan provinces. The flood, considered the worst in the Country’s history, has killed more than 1,500 people, more than 12,000 people were injured, and more than 33 million people were displaced. Due to heavy rainfall and landslides, roads are swept away, bridges have collapsed, and houses are surrounded by floodwater. The communities are currently experiencing flood-related diseases such as diarrhea, dengue, malaria, and malnutrition due to massive devastation to crops and livestock. Many live in temporary shelters as their houses were destroyed during the massive flood in July and August.
Give2Asia partner, Akhuwat, is currently providing ration kits to 35,000 people in Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab provinces. The ration kits are expected to support one-month food needs for a family of seven members.
More help is urgently needed, especially for medium and long-term disaster recovery efforts.
The flooding has devastated many Pakistan communities. Current needs identified by our partners include:
Longer-term needs include education support kits, psychosocial and healthcare support, livelihood, rebuilding, and disaster mitigation activities.
Give2Asia works with local non-profits throughout the country that are certified by the Pakistan Center for Philanthropy (PCP). Below are status updates from several local partners. We continue to monitor the situation and will update our partners’ responses as soon as they become available.
Akhuwat
Akhuwat supports emergency relief through two phases. During the First Phase, Akhuwat provides Cash Support of Rs. 4,000 per family, Ration Bags, Food/Meal Distribution, and medical camps in affected areas. Akhuwat is working in the following flood-affected districts:
Hashoo Trust/ Foundation
Hashoo Foundation is actively working in all the affected areas of Pakistan and providing relief to the victims.
Institute for Development Studies and Practices Pakistan (IDSP)
IDSP flood response focuses on Balochistan, the poorest, isolated, and socio-economically vulnerable Province of Pakistan. Many casualties and injuries have been recorded within the province. Community-based water sources are heavily contaminated, and mud houses are now washed away or heavily damaged. School toilets are also destroyed. IDSP’s university of community development (UCD) fellows have a network across Balochistan that can help support relief and recovery work. Below is the list of items most needed:
The Citizens Foundation (UK)
TCF has delivered 608,930 meals across 37 locations including Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Khairpur and Qambar Shahdadkot. Thousands more meals are en route. There are currently 21 TCF schools which are providing shelter to 4,300+ people (470+ families. The Citizens Foundation (TCF) is providing emergency relief through:
– Providing five million meals to families who have lost all means of sustaining themselves
– Helping to reconstruct homes for 9,000 families once the flood waters recede
– Rehabilitating TCF schools damaged by the floods
