Our Mission

Guangdong Harmony Community Foundation promotes community development by supporting grassroots organizations and individuals. It collaborates with Cangdong Cultural Heritage Conservation and Development Center to authentically conserve and share architecture and traditions.

The Need

Restoration of four remarkable historic buildings that form the Lam Center, where abundant community activities are offered. CCHCDC pioneers methods to create working models that address China's urgent need for understanding and education about true conservation for both professionals and the public

The Solution

Restoration of historic architecture; lectures and training on traditional culture, literary and artistic activities; martial arts and lion dancing academy; educational tourism; Overseas Chinese root-searching research and tourism; in-depth cultural conservation training program.

Our Impact

GHCF is the winner of the first “Kumquat Award” and is ranked #1 on the China Foundation Transparency Index. CCHCDC is the collaborative community partner for the Lam Center project. Its leadership was instrumental in the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for Kaiping Diaolou and Villages.

Guangdong Harmony Community Foundation (GHCF) was the first such foundation in China and one of the first charitable organizations recognized by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Civil Affairs. It is the winner of the first ‘Kumquat Award’ for domestic foundations, ranked No.1 in the country on the China Foundation Transparency Index, and ranked in the Top 30 of the 2018 China Charity Credit listing. GHCF believes that community development begins with people; when citizens engage in community activities, effective governance follows. Sustainable development requires internal motivation, not just external resources. GHCF serves as a philanthropy hub in the Pearl River Delta region.

Cangdong Cultural Heritage Conservation and Development Center (CCHCDC), a leader of cultural conservation in China, manages the restoration and operation of the Lam Center project. Since 2009, it has offered cultural education and overseas Chinese root-searching tourism in Cangdong, a village it revived and restored. CCHCDC enjoys a transnational partnership with the Archaeology Center at Stanford University and numerous academic and research institutions globally. It is the only entity in China to receive awards from UNESCO for both architectural conservation (in 2015) and heritage education (in 2021).

The caliber of architecture and ornamentation of the Lam Center is outstanding in Guangdong Province, reflecting all the architectural decoration techniques of Southern China. The finest architects, building techniques, materials, workers, craftsmen, and artists created the original structures, featuring beautifully rendered stone, wood, brick, clay, and ceramic carvings, as well as stained glass. Exquisite woodwork with gold leaf and poetic calligraphy decorated the hall.

Help us save the precious buildings of the Lam Center for Cultural Exchange and Roots Discovery and ensure that this extraordinary legacy can richly contribute to the Wuyi* community, Overseas Chinese around the world, and all who appreciate Chinese culture.

*Wuyi includes the districts of Taishan, Xinhui, Kaiping, Enping, and Heshan.
