Give2Asia China Flood Relief Response

SITUATION UPDATE: July 12, 2026

Following the impact of Typhoon Megi (locally referred to as “Meisha”) and subsequent dam breaches, including the Liumlan Reservoir in Hengzhou City, severe flooding has struck Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. As of 9 July, the disaster has affected all 14 prefecture-level cities within the region.

• According to State Media Xinhua News Agency, 39 fatalities have been confirmed, with 9 individuals reported missing.
• Approximately 187,000 people have been evacuated from high-risk areas to emergency shelters.
• Nearly 100 residential structures have collapsed across 78 affected counties/districts. Displaced populations face immediate needs for emergency shelter, non-food items (NFIs), and temporary housing support.
• Access constraints persist in some areas due to damaged road networks, though telecommunications have restored 87.7% functionality and power restoration efforts are ongoing (approx. 63,000 households reconnected).

Local authorities have mobilized significant resources, deploying over 12,000 personnel, 1,700 vehicles (engineering/medical), and 5,700 watercraft. Search and rescue (SAR) operations continue on a 24-hour basis utilizing grid-style, household-by-household searches.

IMMEDIATE NEEDS

While SAR is robust, anticipated gaps may emerge in the following sectors as the response transitions from emergency response to recovery:

• Risk of water-borne disease outbreaks and need for trauma/psychological support.
• Ensuring access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities in evacuation centers.
• Support for debris removal and transitional shelter for those whose homes were destroyed.

China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD)

Established in 1989, the China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) is a major Chinese charity focused on reducing poverty. CFRD excels in four areas of disaster management: Emergency Response; Health and Sanitation; Livelihood Recovery; and Disaster Risk Reduction. Since 2012, CFRD has conducted 360 disaster relief operations, benefiting 31 regions across China and disaster-stricken areas in 12 countries, aiding 8.14 million people. 

July 6: rescue personnel assisted a frail elderly man with drinking water in Liulan Village, Xiaoyi Town, Hengzhou (a county-level city under Nanning), Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

CFRD Update: July 12

In response to urgent needs identified on the ground, CFRD rapidly established a hot meal service point in Yunbiao Town, Hengzhou, Guangxi, providing more than 1,000 free hot meals to disaster-affected residents and bringing warmth and comfort during the post-disaster recovery period.

On the same day, CFRD’s frontline response team assisted with the transportation of relief supplies and the evacuation of affected communities in Guigang, Guangxi. More than 1,300 stranded students and residents from Qingbei High School, Guigang High School, Guangxi Logistics Vocational and Technical College, and surrounding areas were safely relocated to temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, CFRD continued to dispatch emergency relief supplies to Hengzhou and other disaster-affected areas in Guangxi, including 3,160 emergency relief kits, 125 generators, 27 inflatable boats, and two sets of excavators and loaders. The first shipment of emergency relief kits and generators has arrived and is being distributed based on local needs, helping affected communities restore essential living conditions.

On July 8, in response to frontline needs in Huanggang, Hubei Province, CFRD established a hot meal service point in Zhumingshan Community. As large cooking stoves were put into operation, more than 4,000 free hot meals were prepared and distributed, providing immediate nourishment and support to disaster-affected residents while delivering care and encouragement during the recovery effort.
