Our Mission

This program aims to establish a rural family health management model and improve hypertension control rates among rural residents through various intervention measures and providing health education. The goal is to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular diseases in rural communities.

The Need

Hypertension-induced cardiovascular diseases pose a significant health and economic burden on families in rural China, where 1 in 4 adults are affected with hypertension. Yet, control rates remain low—16.8% nationally and just 10.6% in rural areas compared to 17.4 in urban centers.

The Solution

The China Rural Healthy Family Program addresses these challenges by improving hypertension control rates in rural areas through a family-centered health management model, education, and community-based interventions.

Our Impact

The program launched its first pilot in Ruyang, Henan Province, in April 2024, benefiting 2,000 rural families across 40 villages. After several months' intervention, the number of residents with above standard systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased by 22% and 15%, respectively.

Program Details

How It Works

The program uses an innovative and scalable approach to improve hypertension control:

  • Health Management Teams: A family health instructor, a selected family member as the “family health manager,” and local village doctors work together to manage hypertension within families.
  • Health Monitoring Tools: Blood pressure monitors and weighing scales are distributed to rural households, and an online health tracking platform is developed, enabling families to regularly track health metrics. Residents with blood pressure above the standard will be urged to see a doctor.
  • Low-Sodium Salt Distribution: Families are provided with low-sodium salt to help improve dietary habits.
  • Education and Training: Family health instructors receive regular training, and community education sessions promote hypertension prevention and healthy lifestyles, leveraging resources from the American College of Cardiology (ACC).

Funding

Together, we can expand this program to benefit more rural communities:

  • RMB 56,000 yuan ($8,000) can support a single rural village for a year.
  • RMB 2.24 million ($320,000) can help implement the program to a new county, reaching 40 villages and approximately 2,000 rural households.
