How Community-Led Projects Drive Climate Resilience in China
By Cao Muhan, Program Manager, China Representative Office
Across China, communities are living on the frontlines of climate change. From extreme rainfall and flooding to rising temperatures and air pollution, local challenges require local solutions—ones rooted in community knowledge and driven by grassroots leadership.
Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with many of these organizations through our Friends Fund partnerships and earlier grants. Seeing their progress firsthand has shaped my understanding of what effective climate action really looks like at the community level. These groups are not only developing practical tools—they are building trust, strengthening local capacities, and inspiring residents to take ownership of their shared future.
Climate-Smart Solutions for Rural Hunan
In Hunan Province—one of China’s most important agricultural regions— Changsha Green Hunan Environmental Science Popularization Center is helping communities adapt to climate change through practical, locally informed initiatives. Their approach spans three key components:
- Climate-Friendly Agriculture: Green Hunan has partnered with 12 farms to test water-efficient, climate-friendly rice cultivation techniques. Participating farmers reported improved irrigation efficiency and 2%–18.3% increases in rice yields, strengthening both food security and climate resilience.
- Grassroots Capacity Building: Through the Spring Breeze Support Program, the organization provides small grants and training workshops that equip local groups, youth, and residents to explore climate solutions and contribute to Hunan’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
- Climate Communication & Public Engagement: Using art, science, and storytelling, Green Hunan collaborates with government and community partners to raise awareness of climate risks. Recent initiatives include research visits to 21 nationally protected corridor bridges, culminating in reports that inform local conservation and policy recommendations.
Together, these efforts demonstrate how integrated, community-driven action can strengthen resilience across rural landscapes.
Building Climate-Ready Communities in Southern China
In Zengbu Village outside Guangzhou, recurring flooding and typhoons prompted the Guangdong Harmony Community Foundation to co-develop a grassroots model for climate risk governance. Working with social work organizations and local residents, GHCF created 10 practical toolkits that blend risk assessment, community mobilization, and emergency training.
Between 2024 and 2025, this model is expanding to nine communities across Guangdong, Guangxi, and Yunnan. To date, the project has:
- Established 9 volunteer climate emergency teams
- Trained 120+ core members
- Reached 22,000+ residents with disaster preparedness initiatives
The program strengthens multi-stakeholder collaboration and fosters a culture of mutual support—key ingredients for sustainable, community-owned climate resilience.
Mobilizing Millions for a Cleaner, Healthier Planet
Launched in 2014, Shanghai Pudong LIFE Environment Protection Center’s Pick-Up China initiative is the country’s first initiative dedicated to tackling uncontrolled outdoor waste. Through nationwide cleanup events, green education programs, and digital engagement, the project encourages citizens to take simple environmental actions with collective impact.
So far, Pick-Up China has:
- Mobilized 1.82 million participants
- Partnered with 90+ organizations
- Led cleanups across mountains, rivers, beaches, and urban areas
- Developed the Pick-Up Planet WeChat mini-program to map and track waste hotspots
LIFE also supports grassroots environmental NGOs by offering training in event organization, volunteer management, and data collection—strengthening the national network behind the movement.
Small Actions, Big Impact: Why Local Leadership Matters
China’s climate challenges are vast—but local communities are responding with creativity, determination, and deep knowledge of the places they call home.
This belief lies at the heart of Give2Asia’s Greener Tomorrows campaign. When donors invest in grassroots organizations, they fuel the solutions that work—because they are built by the people who know their communities best.
Your support helps local leaders protect farmland, strengthen community disaster preparedness, conserve cultural heritage, and engage millions in environmental action.
