Gyirong Mudslide Response Fund - Tibet (Xizang)

Situation Report: September 2, 2026

At approximately 10:30 a.m. on August 26, 2026, a glacier collapse occurred at an elevation of approximately 5,200 meters on the northern slope of Langtang Lirung in Nepal, triggering a massive ice-and-rock avalanche. The collapsed mass rapidly descended to an elevation of around 4,000 meters, scouring the mountainside and generating a massive debris flow. Within approximately six to seven minutes, the resulting mudslide reached the Gyirong Port area in China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. 

The debris flow extended into the Gyirong Port area, at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters, destroying 27 buildings and associated facilities across an area of approximately 0.7 square kilometers. Roads, telecommunications, and power supplies to the port were all disrupted. 

According to a press conference held on September 2 by the Information Office of the People’s Government of the Xizang Autonomous Region, 21 fatalities had been confirmed in China, while 541 people remained missing, including foreign nationals. A total of 499 local residents from five affected villages in Gyirong Town and Sale Township, along with 555 domestic tourists, had been safely evacuated. 

The Xizang Autonomous Region has activated a Level I emergency response for natural disasters, while the national government has activated a Level II emergency disaster relief response. 

Rescue and relief efforts are currently facing the following major challenges: 

1. Extensive accumulation of debris: Mud and debris in the core disaster area are more than 1.5 meters deep, making it extremely difficult and time-consuming for rescue personnel and equipment to advance. 
2. Ongoing risk of secondary disasters: The affected area continues to face significant risks of secondary disasters, including flash floods, debris flows, and landslides in localized areas. 
3. Unstable geological conditions upstream: A landslide-dammed lake has formed upstream as a result of the ice avalanche, creating unstable geological conditions and posing additional risks to downstream areas. 
4. Severely disrupted infrastructure and logistics: Roads, telecommunications, and power supplies have been cut off, creating significant challenges for transportation, communications, and logistical support.

The China Friendship Foundation for Peace and Development (CFFPD) is a 4A-level public foundation approved by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs and overseen by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. CFFPD operates nationally throughout China and partners with Give2Asia for disaster response and recovery.

The CFFPD’s expertise in two key areas of disaster management—Emergency Relief and Response (which includes medical support, psychosocial support, food relief, emergency food rations, and shelter management) and Livelihood Recovery (involving alternative livelihood support and capacity-building to restore and strengthen people’s livelihoods)—positions them to respond promptly to disaster events in China.
