JSNC Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund

Since establishing the JSNC Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund the day after the Great East Japan Earthquake struck Japan on March 11, we have raised over $267,000 through the generosity of donors. From these funds, grants have been sent to Japan to benefit the following organizations:

  1. Association for Aid and Relief Japan (AAR Japan), an NGO providing emergency assistance to the elderly and the disabled;
  2. Second Harvest Japan, an NGO providing food resources to those in need;
  3. Rescue Stock Yard, an NGO providing meals for people living in evacuation centers and damaged homes;
  4. NICCO, an NGO promoting community building and revitalizing the local economy;
  5. PARCIC, an NGO promoting self-reliance in the form of economic sustainability;
  6. Free the Children Japan, an NGO which aims to free children from poverty and exploitation and empower young people;
  7. Miyagi Mental Health Welfare Association, an organization providing mental health care and training;
  8. Eat & Energize the East, an organization promoting the re-establishment of Eastern Japan’s agricultural capabilities.

All are continuously engaged on the ground in the devastated Tohoku region. For more information on these organizations and their beneficiaries, please click here.

Although it will undoubtedly take many years for full recovery, your contribution is making a difference in changing the precarious situations faced by many families and communities in the areas affected by this calamity. We will be directing more grants toward Japanese NGOs on the ground in the weeks and months ahead. We hope you will continue to follow the work that is being done through the Japan Society’s Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund, and thank you again for concern and generosity toward the people of Japan.

The Japan Society of Northern California, founded in 1905, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to fostering ties between the US and Japan. After the disastrous Hanshin earthquake in Japan in1995, JSNC joined with other Bay Area Japan-community organizations to raise over $1 million in support for the devastated city of Kobe. We are proud to be part of the region-wide drive to help our friends in Japan as they confront this new challenge in 2011. Click here to learn more about the Society.
