Gaza Humanitarian Response

SITUATION REPORT: November 14, 2023

Escalating hostilities in Gaza have created an urgent humanitarian crisis. The Gaza Ministry of Health has reported that at least 11,078 Palestinians, including 3,900 children and 2,430 women, have been killed, and 27,490 others injured. Additionally, 2,000 individuals, including 1,250 children, are reported missing in Gaza, many presumed to be trapped under debris. These numbers continue to increase on a daily basis. 

Humanitarian assistance began reaching Gaza on October 21, but its impact has been limited due to insecurity and access constraints. The humanitarian community struggles to meet the extensive needs, and the rising desperation is heightening health and security risks for the most vulnerable.  

Ongoing military operations have displaced more than two-thirds of the entire population (1.5 million people), with approximately half being women and children, according to UN OCHA.  

IMMEDIATE NEEDS

Healthcare facilities are under immense pressure, with shortages of medical supplies exacerbated by escalating attacks on hospitals and healthcare centers. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that between 50 and 100 liters of water per person per day are needed. Limited access to clean water is forcing people to resort to unsafe water sources.  

Gaza’s food system is at a breaking point under the current conditions, compounding existing acute food insecurity for over half of the population, according to UN FAO. According to the UN OCHA, since October 21, at least 451 trucks have entered Gaza, carrying food, health supplies, hygiene products and nutrition supplies. The World Food Programme (WFP) says food stocks in Gaza are running out, with just days of supplies left.

Egyptian Food Bank

Established in 2006 with the mission of aiding society and assisting those facing hunger, the Egyptian Food Bank (EFB) initially focused on hunger-related issues. Over time, it has evolved into a national project serving all governorates in Egypt.   

EFB is one of the few organizations with direct access to the border with Gaza and is working directly with the United Nations Relief Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the Palestine Red Crescent Society. The EFB has responded to the crisis since the beginning of the conflict. As of October 25, food aid from EFB was allowed to enter Gaza through the Rafah Crossing. Funds raised through this campaign will support families and individuals in Gaza through the distribution of essential “Ready to Eat” family boxes that include mineral water, milk, cheese, dates, and canned items that are critically urgent. They will continue to scale their operations to serve the people of Gaza and deliver food through the Rafah Crossing as permitted with the support of Egyptian authorities.
