Our Mission

Pragya’s mission is to enable grassroots, sustainable development for the poorest, most neglected communities in remote and marginal societies, in a way that preserves and promotes local cultures and fragile ecosystems.

The Need

The communities with which Pragya works face vast, interlinked challenges, including: jobless growth and exploitation; climate change and natural hazards; biodiversity loss, resource stress, and energy deficits; inequality for women and minorities; and governance failures and protracted conflicts.

The Solution

Pragya’s integrated programs work across critical development themes to enable self-determination and resilience: food, agriculture and rural livelihoods; conservation and renewable energy; education; empowering women and minorities; health, safe water and sanitation; and disaster management.

Our Impact

Since Pragya’s inception over 20 years ago, its programs have benefited more than 700,000 people, including 20,000 farmer households who have improved incomes and are adapting to climate change, and 22,000 women and girls who have improved health and education, and are asserting their rights.

Pragya’s community-centred approach, innovative project design, and track record of delivering positive impact have been recognized by several honours, including an ICT for Mountain Development Award (2016), a Top 20 Innovation in Risk Award (2015), an Innovation Challenge Winner – All Children Reading: A Grand Challenge for Development (2012), a STARS Impact Award (2010) for Education, an Energy Globe Award (2005) for Renewable Energy, and the Whitley Gold Award (2000) for Conservation. Pragya also holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
