The Heroes Legacy Project provides direct support to the children of frontline workers in China who lost their lives fighting the spread of COVID-19. As a way to show our appreciation for their sacrifice and honor their memory, this project supports their children’s educational and mental development. The program is estimated to support at least 160 children until they reach age 22 or graduate from university.

The Need

The families of deceased frontline workers have been immeasurably impacted, and their children are in need of support. We’ve found that over half of these families are facing financial difficulties after losing a parent. These children need financial support for their education and development. Having just experienced the loss of a parent, they will also need emotional support resources to lead the life their parent would have wished.

The Solution

The Heroes Legacy Project will provide financial and emotional support for these children through a number of programs. The project will create an educational fund to support children (newborn to age 22) of the deceased frontline workers through college.

The project will also provide a peer mentor for guidance, enable participation in a social activity for companionship, provide mental health support to the children and core family members, provide support and guidance for the families and teachers to support the child’s future growth, create an archive to record the growth of the child, and create a “hero story” to commemorate their parent.

The Impact

We’ve already signed up 158 children for this program, and we are looking to support even more. As of July 2020, our generous donors have pledged US$1.5 million. This project supports the development of these deserving children, and it works to ensure that society remembers and honors their parent’s sacrifice. Your support can help these children receive the assistance they need.

Project Deep-Dive

As the first region to face COVID-19, Wuhan and surrounding areas were severely affected. While COVID-19 continues to devastate communities worldwide, China’s—and especially Wuhan’s—frontline workers were especially impacted by the novel coronavirus. Nearly 500 frontline workers of nurses, doctors, police, community workers and volunteers lost their lives fighting COVID-19. Of these, more than 200 were under the age of 50 and had young children.

Many of the families of these deceased frontline workers are facing financial difficulty, and all of them have just experienced immense loss in this difficult time. To honor those who died battling COVID-19, the Heroes Legacy Program aims to provide support for the children of these heroes, both financially and emotionally. Give2Asia will partner with Shenzhen Henghui Children’s Charity Foundation to carry out this program.

The first part of this project is an education fund. With their parent no longer able to provide for their care, this money will go to supporting the continued academic journey for these children. The campaign aims to cover the full cost of education through college for at least 158 children.

The Heroes Legacy Project also aims to provide emotional support through a number of measures, including:

  • Finding a peer mentor for every child to help provide support and guidance.
  • Enabling each child to participate in an activity (e.g. a sport) that provides companionship. These activities will be designed for each age group to give support and camaraderie that specifically match the children’s needs.
  • Helping the child’s family and teachers to monitor their development and aid in the child’s continued growth.
  • Creating an archive for each child to record their growth and their participation and interaction with Heroes Legacy Program.
  • Creating a hero story for every child about their parent to always keep their memory alive.

As of August 2020, generous donors have contributed US$1.5 Million toward this initiative. We hope to raise additional funds to help as many children and families as possible and to support more activities of these children

Join us in supporting the children of frontline heroes in China and honoring the lives of workers who lost their lives in this on-going fight against COVID-19.
