Nepal Flood Response - June 2023

Taplejung, Pachthar, and Sankhuwasabha districts have been affected by recent floods and landslides, resulting in five (5) deaths and 28 people missing. The disaster has impacted a total of 195,749 individuals and displaced 106 households across nine municipalities in the eastern part of Nepal. Specifically, the affected municipalities include Panchkhapan Municipality ward no 8 and Chainpur Municipality ward no 4 in Sankhuwasabha district; Hilihang Rural Municipality ward no 7, Phalelung Rural Municipality ward no 3, Phidim Municipality ward no 4, and Yangbarak Rural Municipality in Pachthar district; as well as Sidingwa Rural Municipality ward no 6 & 3 and Sirijunga Rural Municipality ward no 7 in Taplejung district. These areas have experienced flash floods and landslides, leading to the displacement of settlements, injuries, missing individuals, and loss of lives among the local population. As reported by the Nepal Red Cross Society, the residents of the affected wards are being relocated to safer places.

The government of Nepal, along with Nepal Police, Nepal Army, Armed Police Force (A.P.F.), and the Nepal Red Cross Society in Pachthar, Taplejung, and Sankhuwasabha, has initiated on-site monitoring and disaster management for the ongoing relief efforts. Municipal Disaster Risk Management Committees have been established to oversee the relief operations. Relief materials, including tarpaulins, ropes, blankets, and utensils, are being distributed by the Nepal Red Cross Society.

Following immediate communication with the Nepal Red Cross Society and the Group for Technical Assistance (GTA), the Disaster Management team has decided to provide support to the 106 severely affected households due to the floods and landslides. The distribution will be facilitated through the Municipal Disaster Risk Management Committees. GTA plans to provide immediate life-saving relief materials. Temporary shelter support will be provided to protect the lives of children, the elderly, and other family members. The total funds required for these efforts amount to US$ 23,592.
