Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities

ETIC (Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities), a Japan-based nonprofit organization founded in 1993, supports emerging social entrepreneurs through our core acceleration programs and peer-support communities. Our mission is to establish ecosystems where everyone can unleash their entrepreneurial potential.

We discover and grow emerging social entrepreneurs through our core acceleration programs (idea-stage/startup-stage/growth-stage), events, and peer-support communities. Among the programs we implement, the following programs highlight our wide-ranging efforts to create entrepreneurial ecosystems in Japan.

Leveraging our 30 years of experience working with entrepreneurs, we partner with corporations, foundations, international organizations, and individuals to support Japanese nonprofits and social enterprises through strategic philanthropy, program sponsorship, and program development and implementation.

Major Achievements and Impacts:

1. Empowering Idea-stage Entrepreneurs
   "TOKYO STARTUP GATEWAY" is a collaborative effort with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to galvanize budding entrepreneurs through mentorship and community-based learning. From 2014-2021, we garnered an impressive 10,000+ applications, making us the preeminent competition in Japan in terms of scale. In 2023, we amassed 2,963 entries, exceeding our initial target of 2,000 and setting a new record.

2. Championing Startup-stage Entrepreneurs
   Among the many programs we ran, the acclaimed accelerators are such as “SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP SCHOOL”, “LOCAL VENTURE LAB”, and “MAKERS UNIVERSITY.” The entrepreneurs we've championed have surged over time: 76 in 1997, 479 in 2012, and a remarkable 1,366 in 2021. Cumulatively, from 1997-2021, we have supported 1,915 budding entrepreneurs.

3. Boosting Growth-stage Enterprises
   "Tohoku Fellowship Program" helped the economic resurgence of the earthquake-affected Tohoku regions by deploying skilled professionals to collaborate with SME leaders. Between 2011-2016, we facilitated the placement of 276 business experts in the Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures, collaborating with 130 SMEs. These efforts bore fruit, with the annual revenues of these SMEs soaring from 146M JPY in 2011 to a remarkable 3,228M JPY in 2016. Moreover, over 60% of the fellows have chosen to continue their journey in the Tohoku region, contributing to sustained economic development.

4. Training Leaders across Sectors
   "and Beyond Company Project” is designed to instill entrepreneurial spirit within leaders from the corporate, governmental, and educational sectors through specialized workshops and training sessions. Participation has grown exponentially, registering a 150% increase year-on-year since 2016. In 2021 alone, 11,367 leaders have benefitted from our programs, surpassing our initial target of 10,000.

ETICは、1993 年に設立された日本を拠点とする非営利団体で、起業家の事業立ち上げを後押しするアクセラレータープログラムや、起業家同士の支え合いを生み出すピアサポート コミュニティを通じて、駆け出しの社会起業家たちをサポートしています。 私たちのミッションは、誰もが起業家としての潜在能力を発揮できるエコシステムを確立することです。

私たちは、アクセラレーションプログラム（アイデア段階/スタートアップ段階/成長段階）、イベント、ピアサポートコミュニティを通じて、新たな社会起業家を発掘し、育成します。 私たちが実施するプログラムのうち、以下の プログラムは日本における起業家エコシステムを構築するための幅広い取り組みを推進しています。

また、起業家と協力してきた30年の経験を活かし、企業、財団、国際機関、個人と提携し、フィランソロピー活動や企業によるCSRスポンサーシップ、プログラムの開発と実施を通じて日本の非営利団体や社会的企業を支援しています。

主な活動と成果:

1. アイデア段階の起業家を支援する

「TOKYO STARTUP GATEWAY」は、メンターシップやコミュニティベースの学習を通じて新進の起業家を活性化するための東京都との取り組みです。 2014 年から 2021 年にかけて、10,000 件を超える応募があり、日本で最大規模のビジネスプランコンテストとなりました。 2023 年には 2,963 件の応募があり、当初目標の 2,000 件を超えました。

2. スタートアップ段階の起業家を支援する

私たちが実施した数多くのプログラムの中で、高い評価を得ているアクセラレーターとしては、「社会起業塾イニシアティブ」、「ローカルベンチャーラボ」、「MAKERS UNIVERSITY」などが挙げられます。 私たちが支援してきた起業家は時間の経過とともに拡大し、1997 年には 76 名、2012 年には 479 名、そして 2021 年には 1,366 名となりました。1997 年から 2021 年までに累計で、私たちは 1,915 名の起業家を支援してきました。

3. 成長段階の企業の支援

「東北右腕派遣プログラム」は、中小企業のリーダーと協力するために熟練した専門家を派遣することで、東日本大震災の影響を受けた東北地方の経済復興を支援しました。 2011 年から 2016 年にかけて、 130 社の中小企業と協力し、岩手県、宮城県、福島県で 276 人のビジネス専門家の派遣をしました。 こうした取り組みが実を結び、中小企業の年間収益は、2011年の1億4,600万円から、2016年には32億2,800万円に成長しました。さらに、60％以上のフェローが東北地方への旅を続けることを選択し、持続的な経済発展に貢献しています。

4. セクターを超えたリーダーのトレーニング 「and Beyond Company プロジェクト」は、専門的なワークショップやトレーニングセッションを通じて、企業、政府、教育セクターのリーダーに起業家精神を醸成するように設計されており、参加者は飛躍的に増加し、前年比 150%の増加を記録しています。 2021 年単年で11,367 人のリーダーが私たちのプログラムの恩恵を受けており、当初の目標である 10,000 人を超えています。
