Our Mission
EMpower partners with local organisations in emerging market countries, and other change-makers, to enable marginalised young people to transform their lives and communities.The Need
Marginalized young people lack resources, meaningful choices, and opportunities. Their perspectives are seldom sought or their voices heard. Local organizations that work with marginalized young people—and have the knowledge and solutions needed to break cycles of disadvantage—also are under-funded.The Solution
EMpower provides flexible grants to local organizations, focused on economic wellbeing, inclusive learning, and safe, healthy lives for marginalized young people. EMpower also fosters the organizational capacity, skills, and sustainability of our grantee partners with tailored support.Our Impact
In FY2021, EMpower awarded $4.1 million in 109 grants. Their work directly affected the lives of 71,792 young people and 6,963 adults amid an ongoing pandemic—during which schools were closed, economic well-being was more precarious than ever, and health systems and care were severely strained.Despite the severe impact COVID-19 has had on education, health, safety and livelihoods, our grantee partners and young people continue to make a difference in their communities. Whilst their grantee partners have continued to stay positive and work through the pandemic, it has been immensely challenging to keep going in an utterly volatile context. EMpower is highly responsive to the needs of the grantee partners, giving them the flexibility to respond and adjust to Covid related realities and contexts.
