COVID-19 Pandemic Response: Vietnam

Give2Asia is partnering with trusted nonprofit organizations responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Donate online to support local relief efforts. 

SITUATION UPDATE: September 2022  

 Vietnam was known as the country that has a fast response to the cases. Unfortunately, as the virus continuously mutates – now Vietnam is hit by the fast-spreading Omicron variant, with  3,000 confirmed cases by the end of August 2022. Many argue that this data is much lower than the actual cases as many residents were self-testing and self-quarantining. To date, the number of confirmed deaths reached more than 43,110, who are mostly the elderly or residents that have not received complete vaccine doses. With these  increased cases , the Vietnamese Government  plans to re-activate  field hospitals if another Covid-19 wave breaks. Vietnam has delivered up to 248 million vaccine shots, and the Government is considering roll-out of 4th dose for the communities. 

Current Needs 

As stated, most deaths were in the elderly and people that have not completed a full vaccine dose. The greatest needs currently are:  

• Accelerating the next vaccination dose to health workers, vulnerable groups, and high-risk groups with chronic situations that rely on ventilators 
• Support for vulnerable groups, including meals, rice, and livelihood support  
• Employment for those who lost jobs due to the COVID-19 situation  
• Funding for local subject matter experts

Current local partners responding to COVID-19 in Vietnam include: 

Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation

• Improves the nutrition and food security of children and families, enabling their ability to participate in education, training and livelihoods activities.
• Provides direct food assistance to families for 3-6 months, followed with livestock to enable the family to earn income to ensure their longer-term food security. Livestock is supplied following a ‘cow bank’ model, where families commit to providing one of the cow’s offspring to another vulnerable family.

Care International in Vietnam

• Addressing immediate needs by supporting local food supply, health care and education.

ActionAid USA

• Working on women’s rights, land rights, food & agriculture, emergencies, and climate change in partnership with 45 country offices of the ActionAid federation around the world
