Description of Sekolah Menengah Chung Hua Port Dickson Financial Needs

The Board of Director of Sekolah Menengah Chung Hua many years ago has established Chung Hua Bursary program in order to help those students who are coming from low income family. Bursary are granted to those poor students each year since Junior One until Senior Three.

About 21% of the school population needs financial aids from the Bursary, for example in the year 2022, bursaries are granted to 171 students out of the 790 students. This year, about RM 250,000 has been granted to the students.

It is expected in 2023, the amount of bursary will be increased to RM 300,000 due to the world economic recession and pandemic Covid-19 influences.

Besides the regular donations from the donors, every year Board of Director still need to look for new donors (company, society or individual) to contribute financial aids for the Bursary program.

Another financial aid is the building fund of the new hostel. The number of students in the school has increased significantly in recent years. In 2022, number of students have reached 790 students, of which hostel students make up a total of 35% (280 students). Due to insufficient hostel rooms, even though temporary hostels have been added, dozens of non-local students are still unable to enroll in Sekolah Menengah Chung Hua every year. The school estimates that in the next five years, hostel students will increase to about 400 people, then we will need to add at least 120 beds to accommodate new hostel students.

In view of this, the school Board of Director has planned and actively raised funds in 2020 to build a new hostel building on one and a half acre of the existing campus, with 36 student hostel rooms each on the first to third floors (each can accommodate 6 people) and 3 rooms for hostel wardens. The ground floor is a co-curriculum activities center. At present, the Board of Director has submitted a layout plan to the local government for application. It is expected to start construction in September this year and start operation in the first half year of 2024.

With the support of charitable entrepreneur Datuk Seri Lee Thiam Hock in a "one-to-one" manner, the board of directors has raised RM4 million for this project, but due to the substantial increase in the cost of various building materials and labor, the cost of this new hostel project is expected to increase by 30%, so the board now is facing a shortfall of RM1.2 million.

Due to the two-year Covid-19 pandemic has had a major impact on all walks of life. The Board of Director having difficulties to raise funds again. Therefore, the Board of Director has submitted application to many companies to ask for the donations so that the smooth implementation of this plan will be fulfilled.
