Our Mission

To achieve social justice, gender equality, and poverty eradication by working with people living in poverty and exclusion, their communities, people’s organizations, activists, social movements, and supporters.

The Need

Together with people on the frontlines of poverty and injustice, ActionAid tackles the symptoms of unequal power – poverty, hunger, gender-based violence, climate change, conflict, and disaster – and challenges the ideologies, legal systems, and social norms that lie underneath.

The Solution

ActionAid works to provide both short and long-term support for communities impacted by disasters, poverty, climate change, and more. While fulfilling immediate needs, they aim to provide long-term support to build communities' capacity to respond to future crises.

Our Impact

When disaster struck across Asia, ActionAid was already embedded in local communities, ready to mobilize and advocate. They also provide ongoing assistance - in India, for instance, they work with thousands of young women in 120 slums to advocate for their rights.

ActionAid’s vision is a just, equitable, and sustainable world in which every person enjoys the right to a life of dignity, freedom from poverty, and all forms of oppression. They know this can only be done by shifting power – towards communities and away from elites – and aid as traditionally practiced does not accomplish this. That’s why ActionAid takes action in partnership with people on the frontlines of poverty and injustice in more than 50 countries, including Afghanistan, the Arab Region, Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, occupied Palestinian territories, The Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Disaster Risk Reduction Program

Indonesia is located in the ring of fire. Disasters happen almost all the time. Data from BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency) notes that a total of 3,078 disasters occurred in 2021 with more than 600 fatalities. In 2022 this number increases to 3,542 disasters with more than 800 fatalities. Various types of disasters that occur are earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, extreme weather, landslides, forest and land fire, tidal waves & abrasion, and droughts.

With the relatively high vulnerability to disasters, disaster education has not yet become a priority in education in schools. In fact, according to the Head of BNPB in 2017, the average annual loss due to disasters is around IDR 30 trillion. This will have an impact on national economic growth. With disaster risk reduction & adequate funding, the impact of a disaster will be small and recovery will be faster.

Through the Safe School program, YAPPIKA-ActionAid conducts disaster risk reduction education for students and school community (consist of teachers, parents, school committee, community representative, and village officer) at the elementary level. Through this education, students and school community are expected to be able to know the risks of disasters and reduce the impact of disasters caused. The program has been implemented in Serang and Kupang Regency with excellent result and we plan to expand to reach more student and school communities in other regencies.
