Give2Asia Partner PepsiCo Wins 2012 Stockholm Industry Water Award

June 15, 2012

The Stockholm Industry Water Award announced recently that its 2012 prize will go to PepsiCo, a Give2Asia partner. The award is presented annually to honor the business sector’s contribution to water management. In 2011, Pepsi saved 16 billion liters of water compared with its 2006 baseline.

“PepsiCo has set and achieved a high standard for its own operations, and has demonstrated that responsible water use makes good business sense,” the award jury said.

Give2Asia has worked in close cooperation with PepsiCo to improve water related issues in communities across Asia since 2005. Currently, Give2Asia and the PepsiCo Foundation are supporting a three-year $5 million grant to China Women’s Development Foundation to provide access to clean water for 500,000 people across eight provinces in central China. In the first year alone, the project benefited 265,000 people, began construction on 15 new water supply systems, and renovated 21 water systems including 15 at schools. China Women’s Development Foundation expects to complete the project by the beginning of summer 2014.

China Women's Development Foundation, supported by PepsiCo and Give2Asia, is currently providing access to clean water for 500,000 people in rural China.

In addition to its investment to provide water access in rural communities, PepsiCo has found innovative ways to conserve water all along its supply and production chains, according to the award jury. At its Casa Grande, Arizona Frito-Lay facility, the company has implemented a state-of-the-art purification system to recycle and reuse approximately 80 percent of the water used in production. In 2009, PepsiCo was among the first large companies to recognize and formally adopt the human right to water.

Give2Asia congratulates our partner PepsiCo and looks forward to many more years of improving water access in Asian communities together.
