Alice Young

Alice Young joined The Asia Foundation’s board of trustees in 2003 and joined Give2Asia at the end of 2010. Ms. Young advises multinationals and entrepreneurs on their business and investment activities in the United States and throughout Asia in every industry, including complex cross-border transactions and sensitive legal and governmental strategies. She also assists clients in identifying potential Asian partners and resources. During her more than 35 years of law practice, she has been lead advisor on projects in China, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia. She worked in Hong Kong in the pioneering early 1970s and did her first China deal in 1979. She was the first woman and minority and the youngest to head the New York branch office of a law firm.

Ms. Young has been based in New York, Hong Kong and Tokyo and speaks Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and French. She is a member of the Board of Directors and on the Executive and Examining Committees of Mizuho Trust & Banking Co. (USA); Chair of the Deloitte & Touche Diversity External Advisory Board; and Trustee of the Aspen Institute and the American Assembly.

Ms. Young is a member of the Life Membership Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations, Committee of 100, Asia Society, the US-China Business Council, Japan Society and New York Women’s Forum. Ms. Young is active in several Asian American organizations including the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, NAPABA, AABANY, and AAAYA. In 2004, she was presented the “Justice in Action” Award by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund for bringing Asian American causes into the national spotlight. She received the Inspirational Leadership Award from ASCEND at their annual National Convention in New York in 2010. In 2011, she was honored by the Association of Asian American Yale Alumni for her contributions to the Asian American community, and honored by the Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America with a 2011 Distinguished Woman of the Year award for her efforts as a supporter and mentor in facilitating the success of women.

She frequently lectures on business, law and foreign policy issues and has appeared internationally on CNN, PBS, ABC, Fuji TV, and China Television Network on these subjects. Ms. Young was in the first class of women graduates of Yale College, where she majored in East Asian Studies. She received her law degree from Harvard Law School.
