In our work across Asia, we identify urgent projects that require immediate funding. We call these projects Greatest Needs, and we seek donors who are willing to commit funding for an entire project. Every six months, we update this list so that new projects can be funded and new needs can be met. We invite you to make one of these urgent needs your own.
Partners:The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the DePree Center Public Policy Institute Budget: $348,500 China’s Sichuan area was hit with a devastating 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12, 2008. One year later, thousands of victims still suffer from polytrauma, or multiple debilitating traumas, both physical and mental. Caring for these individuals is complex and challenging and requires specialized training that is not available in Sichuan.

Partner:The Asia Foundation Budget: $125,000 Psychological trauma suffered due to the quake is especially severe for disadvantaged groups, especially elderly women who already suffer both age and gender discrimination in society. Elderly women are most at risk of being neglected, discriminated against, and even abandoned, as post-earthquake recovery progresses. more

Partner: The Institute of Psychology at the China Academy of Science (IPCAS) Budget: $48,000 The earthquake seriously affected the lives of local teachers, many of whom lost their homes and loved ones, had their schools crumble and students killed. These teachers form a very special group for post-disaster recovery. On the one hand, they are the key force of psychological counseling for local schools. Oh the other hand, they are also victims of the earthquake and need counseling and psychological aid themselves.

Making specialized interventions available is crucial for ameliorating the psychological consequences of exposure to extreme and traumatic experiences.
