Venture Philanthropy Blooms in Asia

Give2Asia is proud to be a founder member of the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network.

Singapore, 11 April 2012
The Asian Venture Philanthropy Network highlighted the growth of Venture Philanthropy across Asia today when it announced it had reached 92 founder members at the launch of Asia’s first venture philanthropy web-based directory.

Venture Philanthropy, often abbreviated to “VP”, has taken root in some Asian countries over the last decade as an effective form of strategic philanthropy and social investment. AVPN brings together VP practitioners and others in the VP eco-system to collaborate and scale their social impact. AVPN’s founder members include leading venture philanthropy organisations, foundations, private equity firms, private banks, family businesses, professional service firms, philanthropy advisors, corporations and universities.

Doug Miller, the chairman of AVPN said: “The launch of AVPN with 92 founder members shows the strong interest that already exists across Asia in VP. The current level of activity in each country is small in terms of overall philanthropy. Through AVPN we expect to see the same growth effect as in Europe when a similar network was launched there”.

In 2005 Doug Miller was the founder chairman of the European Venture Philanthropy Association, now based in Brussels. AVPN builds on the success of the EVPA that is the networking and knowledge hub for European VP leaders and has members from 20 countries.

In Asia the early hotspots for VP supporters are Hong Kong, Singapore and other South East Asian countries. AVPN has members in 18 countries including China and India which, in the medium term, are expected to be the most active countries.

Simon Chadwick, the CEO of AVPN based in Singapore, commented: “AVPN is already active through networking and learning events in the countries with the largest membership. The Member Directory launched today allows anyone interested in Asian VP to connect quickly and directly with like-minded organisations.”

AVPN is building a vibrant VP community across Asia. It organises events for members and non-members to improve their understanding of the VP model. AVPN acts as a facilitator and catalyst for the formation of new venture philanthropy organisations. More information at www.avpn.asia

Give2Asia Releases Final Report on 2011 Queensland Floods

February 2, 2012
Beginning in December 2010, Australians living in Queensland suffered the worst flooding the country has seen in 50 years. Pounding rains and swollen rivers submerged over 1,200 homes and damaged 11,000 more. At least 40 towns, with around 200,000 combined people, were affected and water covered an area nearly as large as all of Germany and France combined. Across the state of Queensland, 35 people were killed.

As a result of the massive flooding many of Queensland’s industries shut down, including coal mining, cattle ranching and farming.

At the height of the Queensland floods, Give2Asia began identifying local needs and opportunities for response. Through the Give2Asia Australia Flood Response Fund, we raised $208,499.14 and funded three projects aimed at rebuilding Queensland’s industries and communities. Thank you to all the donors who contributed to the recovery of Australia’s second largest state.
