Cyclone Thane struck the Southeast Indian province of Tamil Nadu on December 30, 2011, destroying crops and leveling houses with 83 mph winds and strong tidal surges. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes, 47 people were killed, and approximately 200,000 thatched homes have been damaged or destroyed.
Give2Asia has set up the Give2Asia India Cyclone Thane Fund 2012 to fund emergency relief and longer-term response to this disaster. Give2Asia will collect funds and work with local partners to identify needs and implement efficient and effective projects in the region. Give2Asia has previously coordinated disaster relief activities in Tamil Nadu following the 2004 tsunami, and the severe floods of 2009. |
