CHINTAN is a registered non-profit that works with some of the poorest and most marginalized people in urban India – waste pickers. These people salvage paper, plastic and metals from waste dumps and earn a living by selling them for recycling. The waste pickers can be children or adults. If children, CHINTAN helps them phase out of this work and into school, through a combination of primary learning centers, support classes and fellowships. If they are adults, CHINTAN helps secure safer jobs and organize them to be able to access social security, their basic rights and facilitate their participation in governance as equal citizens.
CHINTAN also conduct research on environmental issues such as toxics and children’s environmental health and works with a range of partners to promote sustainable consumption and environmental justice. |
