Our Strategy for Japan Disaster Response Give2Asia is taking a local perspective on the Japan disaster, working to empower the affected communities and those whose communities have been destroyed. Give2Asia is funding local Japanese nonprofits, NGOs, professional associations (e.g. chambers of commerce; associations of lawyers, nurses, and other professionals), social enterprises and entrepreneurs addressing long-term recovery needs.Give2Asia funds projects that meet one or more of the following criteria: Innovative ideas that require seed funding in order to demonstrate proof of concept, scale to serve more survivors, or graduate to public or corporate funding Projects that effectively empower and enable survivors to rebuild their lives and livelihoods Information sharing and networking initiatives that have the potential to strengthen and amplify recovery efforts Creative solutions that overcome problems of coordination and information gaps to enable more efficient and effective recovery and rebuilding Services that meet a specific need not currently being addressed by other major benefactors due to the scope of the disaster and allocation of resources for other needs Donate Online Make an online donation of $10 or more. Give2Asia has set up the Give2Asia India Cyclone Thane Fund 2012 to fund emergency relief and longer-term response to this disaster. Give2Asia will collect funds and work with local partners to identify needs and implement efficient and effective projects in the region. Give2Asia has previously coordinated disaster relief activities in Tamil Nadu following the 2004 tsunami, and the severe floods of 2009.

Typhoon Washi (known as Sendong locally) devastated the largest island in the Southern Philippines, Mindanao, in December, causing flash floods and killing nearly 1,000 people. Because the area’s natural landscape has been cleared by illegal logging and pineapple plantations, the immense rain could not be contained by the soil and sent torrents of water, mud, and logs down the mountains and through riverside homes and villages. The flooding left over 40,000 people homeless and the government has declared a state of calamity in the region. Rebel military groups, long active in Mindanao, have called a temporary truce with the government in response to the local suffering.

Give2Asia has launched its Philippines Typhoon Washi Disaster Fund to support relief and recovery efforts. All donations will go to supporting local responders.

On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, Typhoon Neat struck the Philippines, inundating the capital of Manila and leaving serious damages in 33 provinces mostly located in Luzon (north of Manila). Days later, Typhoon Nalgae struck the Philippines inflicting more damage and death.

According to the latest report by the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the typhoons have resulted in the death of at least 50 people. The initial impact of Typhoon Nesat affected 986,417 people and forced 204,376 people into evacuation centers.

In response to this disasters, Give2Asia has launched a Philippines Typhoon Disaster Fund 2011 to aid in relief effort. Gifts to this fund will be used to help Give2Asia’s local partners in Manila recover from the disasters.

Toowoomba, a mountain city in Queensland with a population of 130,000, experienced a flash flood of enormous proportion. On January 11, 2011, with no warning, the water level rose 10 feet, sweeping away cars, homes, and trees, and killing 10 people.

Many of Queensland’s industries: coal mining, cattle ranching, and farming were halted.

In response to the flooding in Australia, Give2Asia launched the Australia Flood Fund 2011. We welcome donations of all sizes to provide immediate relief and long-term recovery for those affected.

OUR PARTNERS FOR THIS DISASTER

Give2Asia is partnering with the following local groups in Australia to support relief and recovery services for flood survivors.

St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVDP)

SVDP will carry out 3 programs to address medium-term needs for flood survivors in Queensland:

1. School Necessities Program: This will provide school necessities (e.g. school books, computers, school uniforms, etc…) to children who have been affected by the flood.
2. Home Visit Program: Trained volunteers will conduct home visits to families whose homes have been damaged by the flood to assess their needs. Assistance offered by the team include: second-hand furniture, interest-free or low-interest loans, emotional and/or financial counseling, and advocacy with mortgage holders or insurance companies.
3. Household Necessities Program: This will provide affected families with basic household necessities such as refrigerators and stoves.

The Salvation Army (Australia Eastern Territory)

The Salvation Army in Queensland will operate out of two headquarters, one in Brisbane and the other in Rockhampton. All centers across Queensland will deliver ongoing support.

1. Helping people recover: The Salvation Army will provide financial support to families for essential household items ( e.g. food, linens).
2. Counseling: Trained staff will provide professional counseling, telephone counseling, and financial counseling throughout Queensland to alleviate potential emotional and financial stress.
3. Support for remote communities: Ongoing counseling services, farming support, and transportation of needed supplies will be provided to remote communities and homes. This will be done through the Salvation Army Outback Flying Service.

]]> Indonesia is suffering from a series of disasters that have killed hundreds of people, and which have displaced tens of thousands. Give2Asia is working with partners on the ground, and has initially partnered with the IDEP Foundation to help the survivors with needs such as tents, food, water and medical assistance.

Earthquake & Tsunami off the Mentawai Islands
The Mentawai Islands off Western Sumatra is reeling from a 7.7-magnitude earthquake and tsunami beginning on early Tuesday morning, October 26. The initial quake triggered the tsunami, which reportedly swept away 10 coastal villages. The tsunami penetrated 600 meters in-land, submerging dozens of houses. Casualties have been recorded as at least 431 dead and increasing, with over 88 people still reported as missing.

In the village of Betu Monga, 80 percent of the homes and buildings were destroyed, and out of the 200 villagers inhabiting the village only 40 have been found. The government is reporting that people in Mentawai need to be permanently relocated, and plans to build a new settlement for people away from the island.

Volcanic Eruption at Mount Merapi
Mount Merapi, an active volcano in Sleman, Java, has had multiple recent eruptions, sending into the air hot ash and rocks and hindering aid efforts. To date 38 people have been killed since Merapi began erupting. Experts say it could keep erupting for many weeks or months to come.

With many people living on the slopes of the mountain, survivors very concerned about their cattle, which are their livelihoods. Many are risking their lives to care for their cattle, while aid groups attempt to offer assurances that families will be given new cattle should all their cattle die. In many cases, people will need to be relocated and provided with new housing as well.

OUR PARTNERS FOR THIS DISASTER
IDEP Foundation: Founded in 1999, IDEP Foundation is a local Indonesian NGO that develops and delivers community programs, training, and media about sustainable development related to Permaculture and community based disaster arrangement. This fund will support Indonesian children and adults’ preparation and resilience before, during and after natural disaster emergencies.

IDEP Foundation is supplying Aid Buckets to survivors in villages severely hit by the tsunami. These IDEP Aid Buckets are waterproof, stackable and secure, and pre-packed with everything a family needs for one week of survival including water, food, and hygiene tools. They are easy to distribute in a disaster situation, and they make it easier to get the right goods to people in need as quickly as possible. After unpacking they are great for storing water safely. One bucket supplies a family with everything they need for one week at a cost of US$33 each.

]]> Deadly floods this month across Southeast Asia have killed at least 112 people in Vietnam, with at least 48 other deaths reported in Thailand and Cambodia. In response to donor interest, Give2Asia has launched the Southeast Asia Flood Fund to support the relief and recovery efforts.

In Vietnam: At least 200,000 homes were flooded and downpours swamped rice fields. Included in the death toll are 18 passengers of a tour bus swept away today by the waters. Rice fields are under water, which will have a longer-term impact on the harvest. To date, the Vietnamese government estimates home and property damages to be more than US$35 million. The number of families displaced has climbed to 150,000.

In Thailand: The worst flooding in decades has left about 38 people dead in recent days. Thirty of the nation’s 37 provinces are affected. Bangkok will be hit by runoff from the central plains, causing serious flooding in the capital.

In Cambodia: Heavy flooding has mostly affected rural farmlands, damaging crops. Ten flood-related deaths have been reported to date.
