Update: May 15, 2013

The Chinese government has officially ended the immediate relief phase for 2013 Sichuan earthquake on May 12, 2013 based on the situation, needs, and resources that have already been provided. In light of this situation, Give2Asia is working closely with local Chinese nonprofits, NGOs, social enterprises and entrepreneurs on recovery needs in transitional period as well as in the long-run. Give2Asia will be supporting projects that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Community-based programs that meet a specific need not currently being addressed, such as programs that target affected communities that are exceptionally vulnerable, i.e. the elderly and children.
  • Projects that effectively empower and enable survivors that are focused on longer term recovery of the affected community.
  • Innovative ideas that can improve the sustainability of the recovery, such as building the capacity of the local affected communities in disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction, and programs that require seed funding to demonstrate the proof of concept, scale to serve more survivors, or graduate to obtain more support from other resources.
  • Projects that build back better, for instance rebuilding projects that also addresses pre-existing issues such as environment degradation, and water scarcity.

The Chinese government will announce a comprehensive permanent recovery plan by the end of May 2013. With this plan, NGOs will have a clearer idea where they should target their resources so as to avoid redundancies with governmental efforts. Give2Asia China will continue to work with potential grantees on their plans for longer term recovery.

Philippines Typhoon Washi Disaster Response: 2011

Typhoon Washi (known as Sendong locally) devastated the largest island in the Southern Philippines, Mindanao, in December, causing flash floods and killing nearly 1,000 people. Because the area’s natural landscape has been cleared by illegal logging and pineapple plantations, the immense rain could not be contained by the soil and sent torrents of water, mud, and logs down the mountains and through riverside homes and villages. The flooding left over 40,000 people homeless and the government has declared a state of calamity in the region. Rebel military groups, long active in Mindanao, have called a temporary truce with the government in response to the local suffering.

Give2Asia has launched its Philippines Typhoon Washi Disaster Fund to support relief and recovery efforts. All donations will go to supporting local responders.
